Abstract Details

To report on the outcomes following the use of a femtosecond laser system (Catalys Precision Laser System, OptiMedica, California USA) to perform capsulotomy, lens fragmentation and cataract incisions in the treatment of patients with senile cataract and then implantation of a light adjustable lens (Calhoun Vision, Pasadena, California USA).

Ruhr University Eye Clinic, Bochum, Germany

A prospective study of femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery in 20 patients were included. All patients underwent cataract surgery using the femtosecond laser, followed by implantation of the LAL lens. The LAL lens was adjusted as per the manufacturer’s guidelines. Clinical parameter like visual acuity, IOL centration and capsular shrinkage were evaluated postoperatively.

The Catalys improved the precision of sizing the capsulotomy compared with manual technique. The use of the laser also resulted in a considerable reduction in the postoperative stabilization time resulting in earlier adjustments and lock-in procedures of the LAL.

The improvements in precision made possible by the laser system are remarkable and represent a significant advancement in the practice of modern cataract surgery. In combination with this adjustable lens, we believe that the refractive finetuning and lock-in procedures could start earlier following cataract surgery.
