Astigmatic correction effect following toric ICL implantation for compound myopic astigmatism

To evaluate the visual acuity achievement following toric ICL implantation for compound myopic astigmatism and its correlation to astigmatic correction and index of success (IOS) in cases without residual postoperative spherical error.

Prospective clinical study on 9 eyes with compound myopic astigmatism treated by toric ICL with optimized outcome. Objective evaluation of the myopic astigmatism was done with simple astigmatic and Alpins method (IOS) analysis and subjective evaluation with achievement of visual acuity and patient satisfaction. Data was recorded from 3 to 6 months of follow-up.


Mean age of patients was 29.9 ± 4.4 years, 11.1% males and 88.9 % females. The means of the preoperative myopic sphere and cylinder were -9.61 ± 2.13 and -2.41 ± 0.89, respectively. The post operative spheres for the all patients were 0.0 and the postoperative cylinder mean was -0.13 ± 0.22. There was a highly significant reduction of the preoperative astigmatism (P<0.001, non parametric test) and the Index of Success of astigmatic correction was 0.07 ± 0.13 (93%). A significant improvement of one line of the mean postoperative UVA (0.02 ± 0.08 LogMAR) in comparison to the mean preoperative CVA (0.08 ± 0.11 LogMAR) was achieved, (P<0.05, non parametric test) with a high degree of patient satisfaction.


Improvement of the CVA of myopic astigmatism can be achieved using the toric ICL which is directly related to the index of success of the astigmatic correction at the lenticular level. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
