Evaluation of explanted intraocular lenses

To present the evaluation results of 20 explanted intraocular lenses.

Anamnesis, routine eye examinations including biomicroscopy as well as the explanted lens photography and gross description, light microscopy, histological analysis of lens surface deposits, IOL power evaluations with lensmeter (IOLA PLUS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), elements analysis.


Analysis of 20 explanted IOLs from 20 patients has been performed. Average timing after cataract/implant surgery was 3,75 years (from 14 days to 11 years). Following lenses were studied: Aqua-Sense (R-Optics, USA), MIOL-2 (Reper-NN, Russia), RSK-3 and RSP-3 (NEP, Russia), Flex (Reper-NN, Russia). IOL dislocations (12 eyes) were the most common reason for IOL explantation and exchange, followed by IOL damage during implantation (5 eyes), power calculation errors (2 eyes), and opacification (1). 17 lenses were crystal clear, while 2 IOLs showed presence of the dark-brown surface deposits, which was attributed to the erythrocytes. In one case significant vacuolization of the lens material was observed. Surface and structural analysis of explanted lenses will be presented.


No significant changes of the lens material were observed in most of the cases. One out of 20 patients suffered from IOL opacification. Further investigations are necessary. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
