Abstract Details

The aim of this study was to present normative values of exophthalmometry in Romanian adults

Central Military Emergency Hospital " Dr. Carol Davila" , Eye Clinic, Bucharest, Romania

In a population-based epidemiological study between January 2003- March 2007, ocular protrusion values (mm) were measured in 1930 normal subjects and in 110 patients of the Clinic of Endocrinology, using the Hertel exophthalmometer.

In the group of normal subjects, 920 were females and 1010 were males. The females mean ocular protrusion value was 15.05 +/- 2.72 mm, with difference between right and left eye higher than 1mm in 5.3%. The males mean ocular protrusion value was 14.21 +/- 2.64mm, with difference between right and left eye higher than 1mm in 4.39%. The group of patients from Clinic of Endocrinology was consisted of 83 females and 27 males. The mean ocular protrusion value was 20.4+/- 3.05mm in females and 21.75+/-2.92mm in males. The difference between the right and left eye was higher than 1mm in 28.1%

1. Less than 5% of the study group had ocular protrusion greater than 18mm in the absence of pathology. 2. We consider that an ocular proptosis greater that 18mm in Romanian adults must be seen as suspect and should be investigated. If there is a difference greater than 1mm between right and left eye the suspicion must be higher. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
