Abstract Details

Evaluation of visual acuity results, the surgical technique and post-operative complications of SS-PCIOL implantation in post-surgical aphakic patients with no capsular support in ETCH in 2009 -2011.

The correction of post-surgical aphakia by spectacles or by implantation of Intraocular Lenses (IOL) is possible nowadays. There are different techniques of the implantation of IOL in aphakic patients. PCIOL implantation has some advantages, as this technique better preserves the anatomy, takes into account position of natural crystalline lens and eliminates visual problems of perception. SS-PCIOL becomes a good alternative, if capsular support is impossible, for example in aphakic patients after intracapsular surgery or traumatised eyes.

A retrospective review of clinical cases and medical reports of the patients with post-surgical aphakia who underwent SS-PCIOL implantation at East Tallinn Central Hospital in 2009-2011

18 cases of SS-PCIOL reviewed. In 60% of all cases, improved visual acuity was achieved. Average visual acuity was in the range of 20/40 -20/25(0,5-0,8 decimal). In some cases visual acuity did not change, because of previous corneal or retinal structural damage by the trauma. The main sclera suturing technique used in East Tallinn Hospital is two point sclera fixation transscleral suture passage with Ab Externo Cum Ab Interno technique covered with sclera flap. 9/0 or 10/0 Nylon (Ethicon) were the sutures, used for sclera fixation of the lens haptics. The IOLs, used for sclera sutured implantation into posterior chamber were foldable three-piece SensarĀ® AR40 (Allergan) or PMMA Aniridia Lens II (Ophtec). Observed post-operative complications were anterior chamber hyphema and rise of intraocular pressure. One case of cystoid macular edema observed and it resolved spontaneously.

: SS- PCIOL implantation in aphakic patients with no capsular support is an effective and safe procedure. In most cases improved or comparable postoperative visual acuity was achieved. The risk of post-surgical complications is minimal, if used proper selections of materials and adopting the proper technique. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
