Image quality and patient comfort after flapless femtosecond laser lenticule extraction

It is possible to correct refractive errors with femtosecond laser assisted small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) without creating a flap. We report about our first results of the new flapless technique to evaluate postoperative image quallity and patient comfort with a questionnaire. 50 patients were examined.

We used the femtosecond laser VisuMax (CZM) for lenticule preparation. Postoperative aberrometry was documented with the Topcon KR-1W aberrometry. A cross section of the anterior eye segment was done by the Visante OCT (CZM). Patients had to answer a questionnaire.


Visual acuity after the SMILE technique was retarted in comparison to conventional Femto-LASIK, nevertheless patients reach a minimum of 0.0 logMAR one month postoperatively. Less dry eye and pain was reported after the smile proedure in comparison to LASIK.


Due to good efficiancy and safty SMILE ist the method of choice treating patients with myopic refractive errors. A bigger patient group has to be evaluated in the near future to achieve statistically more significant results.
