Comparison of PCO development in two different IOL models with square edge design at 1 year postoperative

In our earlier study it was reported that IOLs with square edge design inhibit PCO. In this study the incidence rates of PCO in SN60WF (Alcon) and NY-60 (HOYA) implanted eyes was compared.

Forty eyes of 20 patients (Men 9 patients, Women 11 patients: Mean age: 76.7 years +-9.2 years old) who underwent bilateral cataract surgery from September 2010 to November 2010 and agreed with the 1 year follow-up. Each patient received SN60WF (S Group) in one eye and NY-60 (N Group) in the fellow eye with complete 360 degrees of anterior capsular being overlapped on the IOL. This study was undertaken with the approval of the ethics committee of the hospital and obtaining informed consent from each patient. The best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and the degree of PCO at 1 week, 1, 3, 6 months and 1 year post-op were assessed. The degree of PCO was measured using POCOman software. Statistical analysis was conducted using Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis test (P>0.05).


In the N Group there was no significant increase in the degree of PCO between 1 week and 1,3,6 month but significant increment observed at 1 year after surgery (p=0.024). In the S Group, no significant increase in the PCO grade was detected at 1 week and 1 month postoperatively but the degree of PCO increased significantly at 3,6 months and 1 year post-op (p=0.01-0.015). There was no significant difference in the degree of PCO between 2 groups at the point of each observation. No significant difference was detected in BCVA throughout the 1 year follow-up period.
