Anterior segment parameters in diabetic patients using Scheimpflug imaging versus anterior segment optical coherence tomography

To study the central corneal thickness, anterior chamber angle and central anterior chamber depth in eyes of diabetic patients using rotating Scheimpflug camera imaging and Visante anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT).

Fourteen eyes of ten diabetic patients were included in this clinical study. Central corneal thickness (CCT), central anterior chamber depth (ACD), and anterior chamber angle were measured using both Pentacam (Oculus, Wetzlar, Germany) and Visante AS-OCT (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Germany). Clinical findings were statistically evaluated using SPSS software version 15.0 (SPSS Inc, Chicago, Ill). Comparisons of the means were performed with the t test for paired samples. Pearson correlation was used to correlate between variables. A p-value < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant.


The mean CCT by AS-OCT was 533.43 + 29.14 microns vs. 545.21 + 36.65 microns using Pentacam (p = 0.566). They showed strong positive correlation (r = 0.947). The mean anterior chamber depth was 2.49 + 0.34 mm with the AS-OCT, while it was 2.47 + 0.37 mm with the Pentacam (p < 0.05). The mean angle width was 28.32 + 5.73 degrees with the AS-OCT and 31.00 + 3.52 degrees with the Pentacam (p < 0.05).


Both Pentacam imaging and Visante AS-OCT are useful noncontact methods to examine the anterior segment parameters in diabetic patients with promising applications. Pentacam measurements were more obtuse regarding anterior chamber angle in comparison with the Visante AS-OCT. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
