Phaco tip assessment of different phaco tip designs in microcoaxial surgery

To compare efficiency of a 0.9 mm kelman tips with flared design, a 0.9 mm semi-kelman tips with flared design and a new 0.8mm kelman tip with a rounded design on 30 patients undergoing microcoaxial phacoemulsification


Clinica Jerez, Jerez de la Frontera, Spain


Patients were pre-screened for cataract grades 3+ and above. Phacoemulsification with the same torsional ultrasound parameters was then performed on 30 patients evenly devised between three groups. Intraoperative measurements: cumulative dissipated energy (CDE), effective phacoemulsification time, estimated fluid used, aspiration time. Group 1 performed with a 0.9mm 30 Kelman Miniflared tip. Group 2 performed with 0.9mm 30 Ozil 12 tip. Group 3 performed with 0.8mm Minitip rounded design.


Study still ongoing. Preliminary data indicates that there's no statistically significant difference among groups in all intraoperative measurements.


All groups were safe and effective in micro-coaxial phacoemulsification. However 0.8mm minitip performed better using less energy and less estimated fluid use. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
