Central corneal thickness changes in vitrectomised eyes with silicone oil endotamponade

To investigate differences of the central corneal thickness(CCT) in vitrectomized eyes during silicone oil endotamponade.


Eye Clinic, Clinical hospital center " Sestre milosrdnice" Zagreb, Croatia


The study included 47 patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and proliferative vitreoretinopathy. All patients were surgically treated with pars plana vitrectomy and temporary silicone oil tamponade. Measurements of CCT were performed preoperatively and 7, 30, 90 and 180 day postoperatively. The fellow eye of each study patient served as a control. The values of the CCT in silicone oil filled eyes were compared to control eyes at every control visit as well as with preoperative values.


Significant thickening of CCT was recorded at the first and second follow up visit in study eyes compared to the fellow eyes (p=0,007and p=0,041). No significant difference of CCT values was found between silicone filled eyes and control eyes at the third follow up visit(p=0,356). At the last follow up visit CCT showed statisticaly significant thinning compared to the fellow eyes(p=0,019). After 6 months of silicone oil endotamponade CCTvalues were significantly lower compared to preoperative values (?² = 13,27, P = 0,010). The difference CCT values in control eyes was not statistically significant (?² = 4,71, P = 0,195).


Silicone oil has an effect on central corneal thickness in vitrectomized eyes. CCT changes depend on duration of the silicone oil tamponade which implicates that prolonged silicone oil endotamponade could induce thinning of central cornea. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
