Abstract Details

To evaluate the safety and efficacy of brilliant blue for staining of the anterior capsule during phacoemulsification surgery using the Stellaris Phaco System.

Asociación para Evitar la Ceguera en México Dr. " Luis Sįnchez Bulnes" México

30 eyes underwent cataract phacoemulsification surgery, divided into two groups of 15 eyes each one. It is a prospective, masked, and randomized study. In the control group trypan blue 0.1% was used; brilliant blue 0.025% in the study group. The MI60 intraocular lens was implanted in all cases. The Intraoperative measurements evaluated were: mean phaco power, average phaco time (APT), and effective phaco time (EPT). Central corneal thickness, endothelial cell count, UCVA, BSCVA evaluations, and intraocular pressure (IOP) were measured. Anterior chamber, corneal inflammation, and complications were also recorded. The statistical analysis was performed by multivariate analysis; a p value < 0.05 was statistically significant.

: Results show that cataract phacoemulsification with the aid of brilliant blue for assisting visualization of the anterior capsule to perform the capsulorhexis, is safe and effective; the endothelial cell loss is similar to the control group and the reported in the literature. There was not statistically significant difference between both groups in any of the studied variables.

Brilliant blue staining of the anterior capsule during phacoemulsification surgery is a safe and effective procedure with favorable surgical and postoperative clinical results. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
