Abstract Details

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficiency and safety of the Ex-Press glaucoma implant under a scleral flap for the treatment of POAG and refractory glaucoma.

Eye Clinic " Svjetlost"

A retrospective, non- randomised study was done at Eye Clinic " Svjetlost" , Zagreb, Croatia. Forty-four eyes of 41 patients with open angle glaucoma and of one patient with congenital glaucoma and transplanted cornea implanted with Ex-Press mini glaucoma shunt between July 2009 to April 2011 were reviewed. The follow-up period was 1st day, 2weeks, 1month, 3,5,7,10,13,17,20,22 months after implantation. Mean age of the study population was 63,68 years +/- 3,42 years. Main outcome measures included IOP control, postoperative medications and early postoperative complications.

We studied 44 eyes of 42 patients: 24 males (57,14%) and 18 females (42,85%). 21 eyes (47,72%) had previous eye surgery (cataract surgery or corneal transplantation). The mean IOP was reduced from 31,15 +/-2,71 mmHg to 14,70 +/- 1,34 mmHg. Mean number of medications was reduced from 3,1+/- 0,70 drops preoperatively to 1,9 +/- 0,53 drops postoperatively. A review of the postoperative complications related to Ex-Press shunt placement revealed one case of excessive intraocular haemorrhage (24 h postoperatively), 1 case of hypothony (IOP< 5mmHg) and 2 cases of hypothony with choroidal detachment.

The Ex-Press mini glaucoma implant under a scleral flap provides satisfactory IOP control, medication reduction and low rate of device-related complications. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
