Abstract Details

Bacterial contamination in the lens capsule during cataract surgery could induce postoperative endophthalmitis. To reduce the risk of endophthalmitis, it is important to remove potentially contaminated ophthalmic viscosurgical device (OVD) from under the intraocular lens (IOL). The efficiency of removal could relate to the adhesive properties between the OVD and the IOL. This study was conducted to examine the adhesive property and contact-angle between OVDs and three commercially available IOLs, to facilitate the understanding of how various IOLs might interact with OVDs.

Department of Ophthalmology, Ehime University School of Medicine

Three commercially available IOLs were studied (A, Eternity-X-60, Santen, Japan; B, Acryfold-VA60BBR, HOYA, Japan; C, Acrysof-SA60AT, Alcon, U.S.A.). OVD (Opegan-hi, Santen, Japan) 0.05ml was placed on the center of the IOL for 4 seconds. Contact-angle between the OVD and each IOL was measured using PhotoImpact software. In the next experiment, three IOLs (A, B, and C) were set on the center of a plastic chamber, and 0.05 ml of OVD stained with fluorescein was placed on the center of IOL. The chamber was filled with water and water flow was created. We measured the length of time until the OVD was completely detached from the IOL.

Contact-angle between the OVD and each IOL was as follows: A, 89°; B, 114°; C, 77°. The OVD on IOL A or B was detached earlier than on IOL C.

Adhesive property and contact-angle between the OVD and different IOLs varied. The contact-angle depended on the type of IOL, and OVD could be removed more easily from IOLs in which the contact-angle with the OVD was large. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
