Abstract Details

To propose a protective and curative treatment of Pterygium I-III by insertion of a ring segment into the corneal stroma.

Clinic Krumeich Bochum, Germany

A metal ring of an alloy of Cobalt, Titanium and Molybdenum used in Penetrating Keratoplasty proved to have antivascular properties. Segments of this ring are implanted into the corneal parenchyma of Pterygium eyes. 15 cases of stage I-III of Pterygium were treated.

Only a small group of cases could be followed due to the rare occurrence of this disease in Germany. All 15 cases seem to benefit. For stage I+II the implant of the ring segment stopped progression. For Stage III removal of the Pterygium head + Segment implantation stopped progression and prevented recurrence. Longest follow-up is 5 years in 6 cases.

Pterygium in its initial stages may be stopped by insertion of an antivascular ring segment. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
