Abstract Details

During cataract surgery, the femtosecond laser (Alcon LenSx, Inc.) creates corneal/astigmatic incisions, anterior capsulotomy, and lens fragmentation. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety, efficacy and predictability of creating corneal flaps for LASIK surgery with the same femtosecond laser.

1st Department of Ophthalmology, Semmelweis University

Prospective, single-center clinical trial of 20 eyes undergoing LASIK surgery requiring an initial corneal flap. The femtosecond laser created each corneal flap prior to excimer laser treatment. Intraoperatively, ease of lifting the flap and stromal bed quality were recorded. All eyes were followed with routine vision exams through 1 month postoperatively to evaluate visual acuity, manifest refraction, and slit lamp findings.

Although this was the first attempt to use the novel femtosecond laser to perform flap creation - in all 20 cases - the flaps could be easily lifted with a blunt instrument and stromal bed quality was very smooth. There were no intraoperative or postoperative complications and visual outcomes were excellent.

Use of femtosecond laser for flap creation was safe, effective and efficient. The versatility provided by adding refractive treatment to the already approved cataract-refractive surgery platform has considerable economic and logistical advantages.
