Prevention of the complications of LASIK in patients of an average and advanced age

To develop the list of the preventive and medical activities necessary for successful performed LASIK at patients older of 40 years.


Gazprom Eye Microsurgery Clinic, Moscow, Russia.


The study enrolled 43 patients (86 eyes) older 40 years (46,35±5,72). The basic group (BG) included 20 patients (40 eyes) after Maintain LASIK technique. Control group (CG) included 23 patients (46 eyes) after usual LASIK. Microkeratome Moria LSK Evolution II M2 with flap thickness from 90 to 110 ?m and excimer laser system NIDEK EC-5000 CXIII were used. Maintain LASIK technique: patients received moistening preparations for cornea: Systane (Alcon) or Ocvis (Dubna-Biopharm) in 7 days before treatment (2 drops 2 - 3 times per day); anesthesia is spent on an operational table Alcaine (Alcon) on 2 drops 3 times through 15 sec; 2 drops of VisMed Gel 0,3 % (TRB Chemedica) put on a cornea before positioning a vacuum ring. The flap is not dried up. After treatment Tobradex 3 times per day – for 5 days and Systane or Ocvis 2 - 3 times per day – for 3 months were appointed.


Spherical equivalent were reached ±0,75D in BG in 1st day after treatment, in CG - only by 7th day. Complications during flap creation in BG were only on 1 eye (2,5 %), in CG - on 4 eyes (8,7 %). After treatment: keratopathy with corneal syndrome has arisen in BG on 2 eyes (5 %), in CG on 10 eyes (21,7%).


Expediently to apply Maintain LASIK technique at patients older than 40 years that allows considerably to lower quantity of complications and to accelerate process of patients rehabilitation. Financial Disclsure: No FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
