Abstract Details

To evaluate outcome of combined Phacoemulsification with pterygium surgery in age related cataract patients

Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India

27 eyes of 27 patients with age related cataract and nasal pterygium underwent phacoemulsification with foldable IOL implantation and Pterygium excision. Pterygium excision (bare sclera technique) was performed at the end of Phacoemulsification surgery after inflating the conjunctiva with xylocain 2% with adrenaline. Following outcome measures were noted; reduction in postoperative keratometric values, visual acuity, healing of epithelial defect and recurrence of pterygium.

The pre operative keratometric cylinder power ranged between 1.5 D to 4.37D (mean of 2.25D). Visual acuity improved to 20/40 or better in all patients and the postoperative keratometric cylinder ranged between 0.25D to 1.25 D (mean of 0.67D) at the end of 4 weeks post operative follow up. Epithelial defect healed in 4 days in all patients. There was no recurrence noticed in 6 – 12 months of follow up in these cases.

Pterygium surgery (bare sclera technique) can safely be combined along with Phacoemulsification. As there is reduction in cylindrical power post operatively and the recurrence appears to be less in these adult population undergoing age related cataract surgery. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
