Abstract Details

Comparative analysis study of posterior capsule opacification (PCO) incidence depending on the capsular bag (CB) size and the plate haptic lens (PHIOL) parameters

1 Department of Ophthalmology, Penza Federal State Institute for Post-graduate Medical Studies, Penza, Russia; 2 The Penza Regional Eye Hospital, Penza, Russia

A 10-years analysis of the PCO in 243 patients after PHACO with pre-operative determination of the CB diameter and implantation of PHIOL of a 10,7 mm size was made. Patients were divided into three groups with CB size <, ? , and > PHIOL size.

The PCO frequency was 13.58%, and YAG laser capsulectomy was required in 9.88% of the entire group and in 72.73% of patients with PCO. PCO frequency was 2.52% in CB < PHIOL group, 18.75% in the CB ? PHIOL group and 27.63% in CB > PHIOL group.

CB-PHIOL sizes ratio affects the PCO frequency due to different tightness of CB and IOL contact. The maintenance of the space between them is a promoting aspect of PCO development, and only PHIOL designs cannot guarantee a tight contact of lens with the CB. It requires determination and consideration of the CB diameter in selecting PHIOL size and model. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
