Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare outcomes of myopic LASIK using a prolate ablation profile, a wave front guided and a topography guide optimized prolate ablation profile.

Setting:

Magrabi Eye Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Methods:

Fifty-six patients underwent LASIK bilaterally, with one eye randomized to receive OPA (OPA eye) and the fellow eye received wavefront guided OPA (WF-OPA eye) or topography guided OPA (Topo-OPA eye). Femtosecond laser (IntraLase, IFS) and Nidek Quest Excimer laser were used in all eyes.

Results:

At 6 months (follow up, 87.5%), the mean UDVA (LogMar) was -0.08, -0.10 and -0.05 for the OPA, WF-OPA and topo-OPA eyes respectively. 58% of OPA eyes and 69% of WF-OPA and 62% of the topo-OPA saw -0.10 (20/16) or better without correction (P>0.05); the mean ocular spherical aberration was 0.10 um in the OPA group and 0.09 um in WF-OPA eyes and 0.13 um in the topo-OPA eyes (P>0.05). Modulation transfer function was similar for all eyes at 6 months postoperatively (P>0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in patients’ satisfaction between all groups.

Conclusions:

At 6 months after LASIK, the visual and refractive outcomes, quality of vision and patients’ satisfaction were similar between all groups. No clinical advantages could be measured in the wavefront or topography guided LASIK as compared to LASIK with optimized prolate ablation
