Abstract Details

Purpose:

Magnification of the retinal image is currently the only option for improving vision of dry type AMD eyes. Implanting a telescope inside the eye has multiple advantages over any other AMD optical devices. We present the clinical results of implanting an intra-ocular mirror telescope for improving vision of dry type AMD eyes.

Setting:

The Lipshitz eye center and Optolight vision technology, Herzlia , Israel

Methods:

A pseudophakic mirror telescope was implanted over a regular (in the bag) IOL in 6 dry type AMD eyes and followed for 6 month. The X2.5 Magnification telescope that is presented here is an additive treatment to all other medical treatments for AMD, it is sulcus fixated and designed for improving both distance and near vision. Patient selection criteria, surgical technique and clinical aspects were evaluated.

Results:

All eyes were implanted with a sulcus fixated mirror telescope as a secondary implant over an existing regular IOL. Distance and near visual acuity were evaluated after 6 month and were found to improve vision by 2-4 ETDRS lines. No major surgical or post op complications were encountered.

Conclusions:

As there is no medical treatment for dry type AMD. Implanting an optical mirror telescopic device is a viable option for improving vision of these eyes. The mirror telescopic implant can be safely used for improving vision in AMD eyes. Further evaluation and longer follow up is required.
