Abstract Details

Purpose:

â€¢ To analyze uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) after placing toric IOL in various degrees of astigmatism. â€¢ To analyze Best spectacle corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) after placing toric IOL in various degrees of astigmatism. â€¢ To analyze manifest refraction after implantation of toric IOL in various degrees of astigmatism.

Setting:

Various degrees of corneal astigmatic patients >1D, above the age of 45 years undergoing cataract surgery in Udhi Eye Hospitals, Chennai.

Methods:

This was a prospective study in which eyes with corneal astigmatism >1D undergoing cataract surgery with toric IOL were followed up for a period of 3 months post operatively. Based on pre operative astigmatism in Diopters (D) eyes were divided into 3 groups - Group 1(1D-2.5D), Group 2(2.51D-4D) and Group 3 (>4D). LogMAR uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best spectacle corrected visual acuity(BSCVA) manifest refraction and IOL rotation were recorded at 1 week, 1 month and 3 month post operatively. Corneal astigmatism was recorded at 3 month post operatively.

Results:

â€¢ The Toric IOL significantly improved UCVA post operatively in various degrees of astigmatism. â€¢ The BSCVA showed significant improvement post operatively in Group 1 and Group 2. The improvement was not significant in Group 3 (astigmatism >4D). â€¢ The rotation of IOL in all groups was not significant post operatively for the period of 3 months. â€¢ There was significant reduction in the residual Cylinder post operatively in Group 1 and 2. The reduction was not significant in Group 3. â€¢ There was no significant change in corneal astigmatism post operatively in all Groups.

Conclusions:

On the basis of these results we concluded that the Toric IOL can be considered as an effective tool in correcting the astigmatism of 1D to 4D at the time of cataract surgery. Financial
