Abstract Details

Purpose:

A prospective, double blind, randomised control trial (RCT) to evaluate visual outcomes of patients undergoing bilateral cataract surgery and bilateral implantation with either a multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) or a monofocal control IOL.

Setting:

BMI Southend Private Hospital

Methods:

This talk will present the 3-6 months post-operative results for this randomised control trial. One hundred subjects were randomised to either bilateral implantation of a multifocal IOL or bilateral implantation of a monofocal IOL. Primary outcome measures were uncorrected distance and near vision, refraction and best distance corrected distance (BDCDVA), intermediate (BDCIVA) (70cm) and near (BDCNVA) visual acuity (40cm). Defocus curves were plotted, reading speed and contrast sensitivity were measured. In addition patient satisfaction was assessed using a quality of vision questionnaire.

Results:

Subjective refraction found mean spherical equivalent of -0.03 Â± 0.42. Best distance corrected visual acuity (BDCDVA) was 0.03 Â± 0.07 LogMAR in the multifocal group and 0.02 Â± 0.10 LogMAR in the monofocal group. BDCIVA was 0.37 Â± 0.11 LogMAR in the multifocal group and 0.40 Â± 0.14 in the monofocal group. BDVNVA was 0.21 Â± 0.07 in the multifocal group and 0.44 Â± 0.16 in the monofocal group.

Conclusions:

There were no significant differences in best distance corrected distance visual acuity or intermediate visual acuity. As expected the Near visual acuity was shown to be better in the multifocal group, and patient satisfaction questionnaire confirmed that the multifocal group were satisfied with their near vision.
