Refractive and visual outcomes of a new trifocal toric IOL

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the visual and refractive outcomes following lens extraction and trifocal toric IOL implantation and to share our experience with the use of a new diffractive trifocal toric intraocular lens (IOL) and compare it with current literature

Setting:

A retrospective study, performed in a private ophthalmic practice in South Wales, United Kingdom. It included patients who had lens extraction and trifocal toric IOL implant from September 2014 to October 2016. The IOL used was the FineVision Toric PODFT (PhysIOL SA, Li�Ã�¨ge - Belgium)

Methods:

The study included 19 eyes from 15 patients, which were operated by one surgeon (MM). The mean age was 62 years (�Â�± 8.77) Patients included those undergoing cataract extraction or refractive lens exchange. All eyes had naturally occurring keratometric cylinder greater than 1.5D and all patients were presbyopic. Exclusion criteria included glaucoma, prior retinal detachment, corneal disease, history of ocular inflammation, macular degeneration and retinopathy, amblyopia and previous corneal refractive surgery. The patients�â�€�™ post-operative refraction, corrected and uncorrected near and distant visual acuities, amongst other parameters, were compared to the pre-operative readings and to national standards and current literature

Results:

Whilst all patient were presbyopic with a preoperative mean near addition of �.83 (-/�.14), 74% of patients (14/19) achieved uncorrected near visual acuity (UCNVA) =N5 and the remaining achieved N6. The mean UCNVA was 0.20 (-/�.06) LogMAR post-operatively The mean post-operative spherical equivalent (SE) was -0.11 (� 0.66) whilst the mean SE difference from target refraction was 0.05D (�0.54) The pre-operative average keratometric cylinder was 1.08D (-/�.63) and this improved to a post-operative average refractive cylinder of 0.40D (�1.03) The post-operative uncorrected distance visual acuity (UCDVA) mean was 0.15 (-/�.11) LogMAR with all patients achieving CDVA of 0.086 (-/�.097) LogMAR

Conclusions:

We found good and comparable visual and refractive outcomes following implantation of this aspheric toric trifocal diffractive IOL (Finevision PODFT). Our results were comparable to previous similar studies with other multifocal toric IOLs such as the AT Lisa 909M, Lentis Mplus, Acrysof IQ Restor, and the MFlex T lenses This offers us an alternative in our goal to achieve spectacle independence both for near and distance in patients complicated by corneal astigmatism
