Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare visual quality and performance between patients with asymmetric refractive multifocal intraocular lenses inferiorly versus superiorly.

Setting:

Sungmo eye hospital, Busan, Korea.

Methods:

Total 52 patients who had implantation of the Lentis Mplus LS-313 multifocal intraocular lenses included. UDVA, UNVA, UIVA, high Order Aberration of Preoperative, postoperative: 1week, 1month, were measured.

Results:

The study enrolled Lentis Mplus with inferiorly near added IOL insertion with 25 eyes and superiorly near added IOL insertion with 27 eyes. Both groups had improvement with uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) and best corrected visual acuity (CDVA) compared with preoperative VA (p<0.05). There was no significant difference between the two groups with UDVA and CDVA measured one month postoperatively (p=0.86, p=0.71). UDVA, CDVA, uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA) and uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA) showed no significant difference between two groups (p=0.86, p=0.79). There was significant difference in trefoil;. Group2 had smaller trefoil than group1.

Conclusions:

Asymmetric multifocal IOL implantation with near segment in superior position found similar visual outcomes with Lentis Mplus insertion in inferior placement. Moreover, Group 2 showed better outcomes in trefoil than group1. Therefore, this study suggest that patients have ptosis or visual axis deviated inferiorly consider positioning the near add of Lentis Mplus superiorly so that distance vision secured.
