Visual performance of pinhole intraocular lens in cataract patients: two year follow-up

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To demonstrate visual performance of the IC-8 small aperture IOL (AcuFocus, Irvine, CA) implanted in patients in whom a cataractous lens has been removed.

Setting:

C.M.A. Centro Microchirurgia Ambulatoriale Monza – Italyy

Methods:

22 cataract patients with corneal astigmatism ≤ 1.25, received an IC-8 IOL in the non-dominant eye and an aspheric monofocal IOL in the dominant eye. Three patients received bilateral IC8 implants. Regular follow-up examinations were performed up to 2 years after surgery, measuring the following parameters: distance (UDVA, 4m) near (UNVA, 40cm) and intermediate (UIVA, 70 cm) visual acuity, corneal topography and Acutarget analysis, contrast sensitivity , Hemifield Test and defocus curve

Results:

At 2 years in the IC-8 eye, UDVA was 20/22 ± 2.64, UIVA 20/27 ± 12.39 and UNVA 20/26 ± 6.39. In the monofocal eye, UDVA was 20/19 ± 1.33, UIVA 20/31 ± 9.93 and UNVA 20/64 ± 21.54. Binocular UDVA was 20/19 ± 1.51, UIVA was 20/24 ± 4.93 and UNVA 20/27 ± 3.83

Conclusions:

The IC-8 showed excellent visual performance at 2 years. IC-8 in the dominated eye, combined with best technology aspheric monofocal IOL in the dominant eye provided excellent binocular far, intermediate and near vision. IC-8 implant does not require to add toric correction up to 2 diopters of astigmatism. The pinhole effect takes care of visual performances
