Abstract Details

Purpose:

Hermann Knapp (1832-1911) provided significant scientific research to ophthalmology in Europe as well as in the US. This poster is to honour KnappÂ´s achievements for ophthalmology.

Setting:

International Vision Correction Research Centre (IVCRC), Dept. of Ophthalmology, University of Heidelberg, Germany

Methods:

Selective literature research of books and journal articles via PubMed, Google Scholar and Google.

Results:

Knapp, born in Germany, studied medicine and was Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Heidelberg. At that time the University of Heidelberg refused to establish a separate Chair for Ophthalmology, the University regarded Ophthalmology still being part of general surgery. Desperate about this Knapp left Heidelberg and immigrated to the US, where he made a distinguished career as ophthalmologist.

Conclusions:

KnappÂ´s academic achievements for ophthalmology included the invention of several surgical instruments and numerous scientific articles and books. The eponym â€œKnapp Striaeâ€, which are also known as â€œangoid streaksâ€ still remind us of this great ophthalmologist.
