To report the efficacy of azithromycin 1.5% eye drop plus eyelid hygiene and warm compresses in the treatment of chronic blepharitis.

Ufuk University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology, Ankara

Eighty-eight patients diagnosed with chronic blepharitis were randomly assigned to two groups. Both groups received azithromycin 1.5% eye drops twice daily for the first 2 days then group 1 (43 patients) followed by once daily for the next 12 days, and group 2 ( 45 patients) followed by once daily for the next 28 days. Patients were evaluated at study initiation, at the end of treatment and 1 month after the end of the treatment. At each visit symptoms and signs graded according to the severity and tear break-up time (TBUT) and Schirmer test values were recorded.

At the end of treatment all patients demonstrated significant improvements in the ocular symptoms, signs, TBUT and Schirmerâ€™s test values from baseline. Between the groups, group 2 showed a significantly better and long-lasting improvement in terms of lid margin debris, meibomian gland (MG) expression, MG secretion scores and Schirmerâ€™s test values.(p= 0.0001, p=0.02, p=0.01, and p=0.001 respectively)
