Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the safety, predictability, and effectiveness of Keraring intrastromal corneal ring (ICR) implantation assisted by femtosecond laser and corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) for treatment keratoconus in patients with corneal thickness 370-400Î¼m

Setting:

New Hospitals

Methods:

This study comprised of 46 eyes of 30 keratoconic patients with mean age 26 Â±8.2 years . Intrastromal corneal ring segments KERARING were implanted after corneal tunnel creation with the aid of femtosecond laser. All patients were examined for a complete ophthalmological test: uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), BCVA, keratometry (K1-flat and K2-steep), pachymetry and Scheimpflug imaging with the Pentacam at 1 week and at 1, 6, 18 and 24 months postoperatively.

Results:

Visual acuity improved from 0.1 (Â± 0,5) to 0.3(Â±1.5.0)Corneal topography showed corneal flattening in all eyes. Mean astigmatism reduction was 5.5D K maximum decreased from 60,85D preoperatively to 54.5 D and K minimum decreased from 54.5D to 48.75 D. There were no intraoperative or postoperative complications.

Conclusions:

Combinations of femtosecond laser-assisted intracorneal ring implantation and the corneal cross-linking with Peschke H and Peschke M Riboflavin solutions for the treatment of keratoconic patients with thin corneas is safe, comfortable procedure for both patient and surgeon with low risk of complications. During 2 years follow up period there were not described any changes in pachimetric data. We had significant improvement of visual acuity and topographic data.
