Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the anatomical and functional results one year after performed radial keratotomy in patients with keratoconus.

Setting:

The study as well as the interventions were been done in European Eye Hospital ,Skopje , Macedonia .In this study we evaluate 19 patients ( 11 men and 8 women) with keratoconus in age between 19 and 39 , 31 eyes in which we performed radial keratotomy.

Methods:

The pre- and postoperative examinations : autorefractokeratometry , non corrected visual acuity (NCVA ) , biomicroscopy , fundus biomicroscopy, and corneal topography .The surgical procedure was radial keratotomy with clear 3mm central corneal zone. Postoperative controls were done at the 1st week , 1st month , 3 months, 6 months and 1 year after operation. In this study we present the results after one year which presents the collective average keratometry k1 (flat) and k2 (steep) in diopters ,(NCVA - Snellen chart) , central corneal thickness (CCT- microns ) ,astigmatism (dcyl ) and calculated standard deviation (SD) .

Results:

Average keratometry k1 preoperative 47.58 ; SD 4.058 and postoperative 41.96 ; SD 0.321 , k2 preoperative 62.75 ; SD 4.73 and postoperative 46.26 ; SD 4.4 Average NCVA preoperative 0.12 ; SD 0.1, postoperative average 0.36 ; SD 0.18 Average CCT preoperative 429.86 ; SD 67.49 , postoperative 408.77 ; SD 70.69 Average astigmatism preoperative -4.8 ; SD 2.46 , postoperative -2.9;SD 1.79 Keratometry data in all patients improved ,NCVA improved in 25 eyes , CCT in 26 eyes stayed stable and astigmatism improved in 26 eyes.

Conclusions:

Radial keratotomy is a method that can provide stabilizing the progression of keratoconus , further corneal thinning , lowering the astigmatism and improving of the vision .
