Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the outcome of big bubble deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) with scissors DALK.

Setting:

Niga Eye Center ( NEC)

Methods:

This is retrospective study comparing the results of 10 eyes of Anwarâ€™s big-bubble DALK with 12 eyes of Anwarâ€™s scissors DALK performed at Niga Eye Center (NEC) by one surgeon (DA). Outcomes measures were best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), spherical equivalent refraction (SE) and graft survival.

Results:

Mean age of patients of group one (big-bubble DALK) was 19 years and for group two (scissors DALK) was 22 years. Mean follow up time for group one was 17 months and 27 months for group two. Preoperative BCVA for group one was 0.06 and for group two was 0.11. Post-operative BCVA for group one was 0.53 and for group two was 0.55 (p = 0.42). Preoperative SE for group one was -13.2 and for group two was -13.3. Post-operative SE for group one was -3.3 and for group two was -2.1 (p=0.15). No endothelial rejection reported in both groups.

Conclusions:

There was no statistically significant difference between the postoperative BCVA and SE in big-bubble DALK and scissors DALK. Scissors DALK therefore has the same visual and refractive outcome as the big-bubble DALK and could be used as a reliable alternative technique to complete DALK when achieving a big-bubble fails.
