Abstract Details

To assess the quality of life in patients equipped with scleral lenses using the Moroccon version of NEI-VFQ 25

Ophtalmology department, Mohammed VI University Hospital, Marrakesh, Morocco.

The quality of life (QOL) was evaluated before and after wearing scleral lenses using a version adapted to our context in Moroccan dialectal Arabic from the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (25).

48 patients equipped with scleral lenses were included, the main indication was severe corneal ectasia (27 patients) followed by astigmatism post keratoplasty (10 cases), post-traumatic opacity (6 patients) and ocular surface diseases (5 cases). The mean follow-up of the port was 8 months. Visual acuity increased from 0.8 to 0.1 logMAR after fitting. Mean QOL scores of patients were significantly higher after fitting with an overall score of 74, with an average increase of 46. The improvement in scores of vision, dependence and disability was more evident in the first 3 groups studied (keratoconus, post-keratoplasties and post-traumatic corneal opacity).

The scleral glasses with high oxygen permeability allow a significant improvement in the quality of life of these patients in whom the various therapeutic means were limited.
