Dokuz Eylul University School of Medicine

Medical records of 30 patients diagnosed with vernal keratoconjunctivitis and followed-up at least 6 months between January 2005 and January 2017 were reviewed. Symptoms, treatments, number of recurrences, clinical results and complications were assessed

Sixteen patients were male, fourteen were female. Mean age was 11.9Â±6.6 years (5-30 years). Mean follow-up was 23.4Â±23.3 months (6 months-7 years). Bilateral involment was present in all patients. Topical combined mast cell stabilizators receptor anataoginsts, steroids, cyclosporine A were applied in a stepwise approach. Mean number of recurrences was 2.03Â±1.2(1-6) per year. Recurrences were resolved by adding low-dose surface-active topical steroids and increasing the dose of topical cyclosporine maintanence therapy. No surgical intervention was needed. No serious complications ensued due to the disease itself and/or treatment.

Combination therapy may improve symptoms and clinical findings in patients with vernal keratoconjunctivitis. Also, number of recurrences can be reduced as well as complications originating from the disease.
