Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine the progression the of topographic indices in patients with keratoconus and marginal pellucid degeneration.

Setting:

The study includes 20 eyes of 10 consecutive patients with keratoconus and marginal pellucid degeneration and took place at the Medical university Plovdiv, Faculty of medicine, Department of Ophthalmology.

Methods:

Corneal topography was performed with OCULUS Keratograph 5M. We evaluated the indices: Rh(horizontal radius), Rv(vertical radius), Rm (mean radius), Kmax, ISV (index of surface variance), IVA(index of vertical asymmetry), KI (keratoconus index), CKI(central keratoconus index), Rmin, IHA (index of height asymmetry, IHD (index of height decentration) from two visits with mean interval of one year between the them.

Results:

We compared the data using nonparametric analysis (Wilcoxon Signed Test). No statistically significant difference was found between the values of the indices from the two visits - Rh2-Rh(p=0,444) RV2-RV (p=0,526), Rm2-Rm(p=0,614), Kmax2-Kmax(p=1,0), ISV2=ISV(p=0,668), IVA2-IVA(p=0,341), KI2-KI(p=0,519), CKI2-CKI(p=0,607),Rmin2-Rmin(p=0,654), IHA2-IHA(p=0,568), IHD2-IHD(p=0,568).

Conclusions:

The interval of one year too short to determine a significant progression in the patients with keratoconus and marginal pellucid degeneration.
