Severe anterior capsule contraction treated by femtosecond-laser capsulotomy

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To describe an alternative method to treat post-operative capsular fimosis (anterior capsule contraction syndrome) using a cataract femtosecond laser system.

Setting:

Cataract and Refractive Unit, Oftalvist Clinic, Alicante, Comunidad Valenciana, Spain.

Methods:

A new capsulotomy is created using Catalys Precision Laser system (Johnson & Johnson Vision) over the contracted anterior capsule. The spectral-domain integral guidance system is customized to precisely place the new capsulotomy between the contracted capsule and the anterior surface of the lens, achieving a circular resection in the contracted capsule of the desired diameter. Remnants of the new capsulotomy disc are removed using a CCC movement trough a clear corneal incision.

Results:

2 cases of full anterior capsule contraction and one partial contraction with different degrees of capsular fibrosis were experienced after uneventful cataract phacoemulsification with multifocal IOL and tension ring treatment in a patient with simultaneous bilateral surgery. Both eyes were treated with the described method. The new capsulotomy was successfully removed using a CCC maneuver after laser treatment. 1 month post-operatively patient have recovered visual acuity with no further complications.

Conclusions:

Femtosecond laser has shown to be a safe and efficient method to treat post-operative cataract capsular fimosis
