Evaluation of visual outcomes and rotational stability of hydrophobic acrylic aspheric toric IOL: prospective study

To evaluate the efficacy in terms of visual and refractive outcome and roational stability of Aspheric hydrophobic acrylic Toric IOL (Tecnis Toric)implantation in cases of cataract with preexisting corneal astigmatism




A prospective study was done on 50 eyes of 43 patients cataract with corneal astigmatism between 1.25D to 3.25D with visual potential of 20/25 after surgery. Phacoimulsification with toric IOL was implanted and patients were followed up on postop day 1, day 7, 1 month and 3 months. Preoperatively visual acuity, automated and manifest refraction, slit lamp examination, fundoscopy, applanation tonometry, optical biometry and corneal topography was done. At each follow up visual acuity, objective and subjective refraction, optical biometry, topography and dilated slit lamp photography is done. IOL position and its rotation is ascertained using the slit lamp photography


Mean preoperative corneal astigmatism was 1.95 D�Â�± 0.77D. Mean LogMar UDVA was 0.09�Â�± 0.11, mean residual manifest cylinder 0.38�Â�± 0.29 at posoperative 3 months. The difference between preoperative corneal astigmatism and refractive astigmatism at all postoperative visits was statistically significant (all p<0.001). Mean absolute IOL rotation was 3.36�Â�º �Â�± 3.15, 3.09�Â�º �Â�± 2.83, 3.28�Â�º �Â�±: 3.15, and 3.28�Â�º�Â�± 2.95 at 1 day, 1 week, 1 months and 3 months after surgery, respectively. The difference in IOL rotation between the 1-day and 3-month postoperative visits was statistically not significant (p=0.502)


Tecnis toric IOL is effective in treating corneal astigmatism in patients undergoing cataract surgery. It also shows excellent rotational stability.
