Accuracy of intraocular lens power calculation: comparison between SRK/T, Hoffer Q and Barrett Universal Formula II

Main goal of the study was to evaluate and compare the accuracy of intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation between SRK/T, Hoffer Q and Barrett Universal Formula II after phacoemulsification.

Prospective study that included patients undergoing phacoemulsification with IOL implantation (PCB00, AMO�Â�®) performed by the same surgeon. Biometric data were measured with the optical biometer (IOLMaster700, Carl Zeiss Meditec�Â�®) and we used the constants of the Group for Laser Interference Biometry (ULIB). The median absolute error (MedAE), standard error and 95% confidence interval predicted with SRK/T, Hoffer Q, and Barrett Universal II intraocular power calculations formulas were evaluated and compared. The percentage of eyes with the prediction of error of 0,5D; 1,0D was also calculated.


Sixty-five eyes were enrolled, mean age was 70.7 �Â�± 9,2 years, 61,5% female, mean IOL power was �,7�Â�± 3,6D. The MedAE was 0,26 with SRK/T, 0,22 with Hoffer Q and 0,27 with Barrett Universal Formula II. The standard error was 0,25; 0,30 and 0,26; 95% confidence interval was �ï��›0.22,0.37�ï��; �ï��›0.22,0.37�ï�� and �ï��›0.25,0.40�ï�� with SRK/T, Hoffer and Barrett Universal Formula II, respectively. The percentage of patients within 0,5D and 1,0D was: 81,5% and 96,8% with SRK/T; 83,4% and 94,7% with Hoffer Q and 73,3% and 96,8% with Barrett Universal Formula II, respectively.


All formulas studied �â�€�“ SRK/T, Hoffer Q and Barrett Universal Formula II performed well and showed good predictability.
