Abstract Details


To determine and compare central corneal thickness (CCT) and endothelial cell density (EDC) in healthy patients.


Department of Ophthalmology, Medical University Plovdiv, Bulgaria


The study enrolled 40 patients (80 eyes), with mean age 46,35 ± 12,36 from 30 to 70 years, 14 men (35%) and 26 women (65%). We used Anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT, Optovue/RTVue) to measure CCT and In vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) (Heidelberg Retina Tomograph/Rostock Cornea Module) to determine ECD.


The mean value of CCT 537±30,31μm for the right eyes and 535,83±30,04μm for the left eyes.The mean value of ECD 2732±358,13 for the right eyes and 2746±420,55 for the left eyes.According ECD there was no significant difference between both eyes(p=0,349).CCT values in both group showed significant statistic differences for the left eyes(p=0,007),and were higher in the male group.The mean value of ECD for the left eye in male group 2745±337,93,female group 2746,62±465,32 without significant difference between them(p=0,264).A correlation between CCT and age was not found(p=0,067)in contrast to ECD and age(p=0,045).


There was no correlation between CCT and ECD. There was not found significant difference for CCT between both eyes (p=0,840). We found higher values of CCT in male group, statistically significant for left eyes (p=0,007). Low correlation between ECD and age was found as ECD decreased with age.
