Abstract Details

To assess the efficacy of Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) as primary or adjunctive treatment for patients with high intraocular pressure (IOP),to compare the results between different subgroups and against other studies.

Rennie Eye Clinic, St Helens Hospital, St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals

Retrospective study (2013-2015) based on data collected from laser records and patients notes, including 197 eyes from 162 patients with IOP>21 mm Hg.The patients who underwent cataract surgery after the laser procedure were excluded.Treatment protocol:180 degrees inferior or superior half(50 spots) or 360 degrees(100 spots).IOP was measured at baseline and at 3,6,12,18 and 24 months after the procedure.

67.9% of patients had Primary open angle glaucoma(POAG) and 32.1% Ocular hypertension(OHT).The primary outcome measure was the change in IOP between baseline and each interval.A statistically significant decrease(p<0.001) (>20.95%) was observed between the mean baseline IOP and at 3,6,12 months and 24 months. Also, comparing the reduction in the mean IOP between the two different protocols used, there was a significant reduction(p=0.057) in IOP at 24 months for the 360 degrees protocol, compared to 180 degrees protocol. The reduction in mean IOP between OHT and POAG patients was similar, with no significant diferenties.

SLT is an effective and sustained primary or adjunctive treatment for patients with high IOP,reducing the mean IOP by > 20% for at least 2 years, results comparable with other studies.Baseline IOP was found to be the most significant factor in measuring the efficacy of the therapy.Also,360 degrees protocol was more effective at 2 years than 180 degrees protocol.
