Abstract Details

Purpose:

To demonstrate the innovative 'E' chart technique, to do mass screening in schools, utilizing the school teachers, to do vision screening, of their students, and documenting their vision status of each eye.

Setting:

Schools

Methods:

Once a school administration is sensitised, the team from our eye institute, visits and trains the teachers, on how to use the 'E' vision screening card , to check the vision status, of each eye, of each student, and to document, the same. Once, the teachers have completed the screening , then the team of trained Optometrist(s), and Ophthalmologist, will conduct cycloplegic retinoscopy and refraction, on the students, identified, by the teachers, in their screening programme.

Results:

Our experience has shown, that an average of 12-15% of the total student strength, in the school, are required to be checked in detail, by our team.

Conclusions:

School screenbing using the innovative: 'E' chart screening method is time, cost and manpower friendly method, for mass screening of school children, for refractive errors.
