Correction of low myopia with SMILE: one year experience

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To demonstrate that patients affected by low myopia (range -1,25 D to -3,50 D) were treated with SMILE , the outcomes were excellent ,stability and patient comfort and satisfaction.

Setting:

San Bassiano Hospital, Bassano del Grappa (VI), Italy, Chief: Dr. S. Morselli

Methods:

We treated 27 eyes of 15 patients affected by low myopia, mean age was 26.44±4,22 years, mean preoperative myopia was -2,31±0,60 D. The surgical technique was uniform, the refractive lenticule was created according to the myopic error using the VisuMax femtosecond laser (carl Zeiss Meditec) . The SMILE cap thickness was 110 μ, optical zone was varied from 6 to 6.5 mm and a supero nasal or temporal incision was 3.5 mm. Both planes and lenticule were dissected and removed manually followed by washing the interface.

Results:

The day after all corneas were clear, the mean post operative spherical equivalent after first week was -0,23±0,27 D and the mean UCDVA was 0,96±0,12 decimal fraction. After one year the mean post operative spherical equivalent remained stable and was -0,20±0,27 D the mean UCDVA was 0,98±0,10 decimal fraction. Suction loss occurred in 2 eyes, one was re docked, one was converted to Lasik flap treated with excimer laser. No eyes had loss of BCVA postoperatively.

Conclusions:

The flapless smile procedure is safe and effective to correct low myopia and it is comfortable for a patient with a very low post operative pain. The post operative time recovering was very rapid even in two eyes that suffered form intra-operative complications.
