Effect of photoprotection in refractive excimer laser ablation on saturated with riboflavin cornea

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the effect of photoprotection in the new technology at photorefractive ablation with riboflavin.

Setting:

National Ophthalmology Center named after acad. Z.Aliyeva, Azerbaijan.

Methods:

In the clinic, transepitelial PRK and, saturating riboflavin, Femto – LASIK surgeries before its refractive ablation were performed on 102 eyes of 69 patients with myopia and myopic astigmatism of varying degrees. Transepithelial PRK (TPRK) was performed on 66 eyes (33 patients), Femto – LASIK surgeries were performed on 72 eyes, 36 of which were with photoprotection in the fellow eye. In the clinic surgeries were performed on excimer laser ophthalmic units 'MEL-80', 'WaveLight-EX500' and femtolasers 'VisuMax', 'WaveLight-FS200'.

Results:

With TFRK complete epithelization of ablation zone within 24-48 hours has been featured on 68 of the 76 eyes. Lacrimation and photophobia not exceed 1 point when assessing on a 4-point scale. During the operation Femto-LASIK with photoprotection all patients noted a more comfortable subjective sensations in the eye in comparison with the other eye, in which Femt -LASIK surgeries performed by the conventional technique. After month after the surgery, the deviation from the calculated refraction, not exceeding ± 1.0 D,were marked on 58 of the 66 eyes after TFRK, and on33 of 36 eyes after Femto - LASIK.

Conclusions:

Conducting photorefractive ablation after corneal saturation with riboflavin is accompanied with effect of photoprotection. Clinical observations in the early and late postoperative period with an analysis of the visual and optical refractive results shown perspectivity of such a photorefractive technology. Positive clinical results of photorefractive ablation with riboflavin, during TPRK and Femto - LASIK surgeries, indicate the prospects of this technology of laser refractive surgery.
