Abstract Details

Purpose:

This study was specialized to compare the efficacy and safety of phacotrabeculectomy and trabeculectomy in the treatment of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG)

Setting:

This Study took place between 2010-2014 in Sisli Hamidiye Etfal Training And Research Hospital Department of Ophtalmology, Istanbul, Turkey.

Methods:

This is a comparative retrospective case series study. Sixteen patients (19 eyes) with POAG were enrolled. Of these, 9 underwent phacotrabeculectomy and 10 underwent trabeculectomy alone. IOP, filtering blebs, and complications were compared at the final follow-up. Complete success was defined as a final IOP less than 21 mmHg without IOP-lowering medication.

Results:

Phacotrabeculectomy and trabeculectomy groups were similar for demographic features and follow up time. We detect that mean pre-operative intraocular pressure (IOP) was 29.75 ± 8.82 mm Hg and mean post-operative IOP was 14.5 ± 3.16 mm Hg in phacotrabeculectomy patients. Mean pre-operative IOP was 21.55 ± 6.00 and mean post-operative IOP was 13.22 ± 3.07 mmHg in trabeculectomy group.

Conclusions:

The dropping in IOP was 38.65 % in trabeculectomy group and 55.6 % in phacotrabeculectomy group. We assume that more favorable results of combined group was dependent to high mean preoperative values. We found that both approaches were successful in the treatment in unresponsive to medical therapy of POAG.
