Abstract Details

Purpose:

The presentation of medical and surgical processes in Ancient Egypt focusing after all in Ophthalmology is the aim of this work

Setting:

A' Ophthalmologic Department of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, AHEPA Hospital

Methods:

We used the Edwin Smith and Ebers surgical papyrus and also other ancient sources i.e. ancient writers as Herodotus

Results:

There are many surprising findings in this study for the diagnosis and therapy of the eye diseases. Another amazing point is the high artistic perfection in depiction of the eye in Egyptian art.

Conclusions:

Ancient Egyptians applied pioneering methods copying with eye diseases but also kept the eye as a sovereign symbol in their daily and secret life.
