Intraocular lens power calculation methods for eyes that have undergone LASIK.: comparison between Orbscan and Pentacam readings

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report refractive outcomes following phacoemulsification (PE) and posterior chamber intraocular lens (PCIOL) implantation in eyes with previous corneal refractive surgery.

Setting:

Whipps Cross University Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust

Methods:

In this retrospective case series, 21 eyes of 18 patients with previous keratorefractive surgery for myopia laser in situ keratomileusis underwent PE+PCIOL. The Orbscan II scanning slit topography was employed to determine the flattest keratometric reading within the 3-mm central zone and the Pentacam was used to determine the estimated K-readings within the 3 mm zone. This measurement was used as the generic mean value utilized for the IOL calculator online software Version 4.6, ASCRS foundation) to calculate IOL power

Results:

Mean age and follow-up period were 55±3.5 years. Mean implanted lens power was 18.5±4.25 D There was no significant difference between mean target refraction (-0.75±0.5D) and achieved postoperative spherical equivalent refractive error (-0.55±0.75) at final follow-up (P=0.05). The achieved spherical equivalent refractive error was within ±0.50 D of intended refraction in 80 % of the eyes.

Conclusions:

We found the use of Orbscan and Pentacam K values to be equally useful in the calculation of IOL power in eyes with previous corneal refractive surgery with the help of the IOL calculator software.
