Abstract Details

Purpose:

Accurate measurement of central corneal thickness (CCT) is highly important in the diagnosis and treatment of several diseases of the eye. The purpose of this study was to compare three different devices in terms of CCT measurements in healthy individuals.

Setting:

Karadeniz Technical University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology, Trabzon, Turkey.

Methods:

One hundred twenty eyes of 60 participants with no additional ocular pathology other than refractive error were included in the study. CCT values were measured using Lenstar LS 900 biometer (Haag-Streit AG, Koeniz, Switzerland) (I), AL-Scan (Nidek Co. Ltd., Japan) (II) and RTVue-100 spectral domain optical coherence tomography (Optovue, Fremont, California, USA) (III), consecutively. CCT values obtained with the three devices were then compared statistically.

Results:

Mean age of the participants was 33.52 ± 7.48 (23 - 55). CCT values obtained from the three devices were 538.28 ± 31.33 (461 – 613), 551.8 ± 31.39 (479 – 631) and 531.67 ± 30.5 (458 – 602) microns, respectively (p < 0.001 [for I vs II p<0.001, for I vs III p<0.001, for II vs III p<0.001]). Measurements obtained with the three devices exhibited a high level of correlation (for I vs II r = 0.929, p < 0.001; for I vs III r = 0.987, p < 0.001; for II vs III r = 0.934, p <0.001).

Conclusions:

CCT measurements vary depending on the device used. All three devices used in this study are non-invasive in CCT measurement and are easily applied. Measurements obtained with RTVue-100 were lower than those from the other two devices. Although all three devices exhibited a high level of correlation with one another, the devices are not interchangeable.
