Tear osmolarity and tear film parameters in patients with diabetes mellitus

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare tear osmolarity and tear film parameters between in patients with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus and patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus.

Setting:

Istanbul Medipol University, Ophthalmology Department, Istanbul, Turkey

Methods:

The study enrolled 30 patients with insulin dependent diabetes and 30 patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes. Tear osmolarity, tear film break-up time (TBUT), Schirmer I test measurements, fluorescein corneal staining, and ocular surface disease index (OSDI) scores were evaluated. The results were compared between two groups.

Results:

The mean tear osmolarity was 308 mOsm/L in the insulin dependent group and 295 mOsm/L in the non-insulin dependent group. The mean values of TBUT, Schirmer I test, corneal staining, and OSDI scores were 10.3 ± 3.4 seconds, 14.8 ± 9.2 mm, 1.2 ± 1.1, and 24 ± 0.9 in the insulin dependent group, whereas the mean values were 12.3 ± 4.4 seconds, 16.2 ± 7.2 mm, 0.4 ± 0.8, and 32 ± 0.7 in the non-insulin dependent group, respectively.

Conclusions:

This study showed that patients with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus had higher tear hyperosmolarity more abnormal tear film function than patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus.
