Crosslink in pediatrics patients with keratoconus

Abstract Details

Purpose:

In pediatrics patients with keratoconus, crosslink; to present the early results of the corneal cross-linking practice with ultraviolet A and riboflavin solutions

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine, Gaziantep University, Gaziantep

Methods:

10 eyes of total 6 patients, 2 girls and 4 boys, admitted to the pediatric ophthalmology clinic and diagnosed with keratoconus were analyzed. The average sim KAvg and corneal astigmatism cylindrical values and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of the patients were evaluated before and after application in monthly controls. According to the corneal thickness, isotonic above 440μ, hypotonic between 400-440μ and trans-epithelial under 400μ riboflavin solutions were used. The measurements were made by Sirius © topography device.

Results:

The average follow-up period and age were 5.3 months (3-6 months) and 14.3 years (12-17 years), respectively. Sim KAvg values were 48.3 ± 3.98 D and 48.55 ± 4.0 D, respectively (P = 0.629), corneal astigmatism cylindrical values were 4.45 ± 1.97 D and 4.56 ± 1.81 D, respectively (P=0.671) and BCVA values were 0.63 ± 0.47 and 0.63 ± 0.38, respectively (P=0.978) before and after (the last measurement) application. None of the patients experienced any serious adverse effect.

Conclusions:

Crosslink application in pediatric patients is a treatment method which is troublesome in terms of the need for sedation and/or anesthesia, time-consuming, requiring patience with respect to follow-up. Although the short term effects of the application are statistically significant, it is important to monitor the long-term data and the course of disease.
