Changes in distance and near visual acuity

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate the axial shift of multifocal intraocular lenses (MIOL) after Nd:YAG capsulotomy by measuring the anterior chamber depth (ACD)and to determine its potential effect on refraction, near and distance visual acuity(VA).

Setting:

Izmir University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology

Methods:

This study comprised 36 eyes of 18 patients (6 female and 12 male) with multifocal IOL who underwent Nd:YAG capsulotomy for posterior capsule opacification.Near and distance VA and objective refraction values were determined at 1 week and 1 months after capsulotomy. ACD and other biometrical parameters including axial length(AL), central corneal thickness(CCT) and keratometric data(KD) were measured using optical biometry.

Results:

The mean distance and uncorrected near VA at the baseline increased from 0.35±0.15 (logMAR) and 0.35±0.14 to 0.13±0.03 and 0.03±0.04 at first week, and 0.11±0.03 and 0.008±0.02 at first month(p<0.05). The VA increase at the distance and near were not significantly different(p>0.05).The mean spherical equivalent which was -0.01±0.56 diopters(D) at the baseline changed to -0.05±0.43D at first week and -0.05±0.36D at first month(p>0.05). The mean ACD increased from 3.6±0.47mm to 3.77±0.4mm and 3.8±0.38mm at the first week and month, respectively. The changes in ACD were statistically significant (P<0.05).

Conclusions:

Laser capsulotomy increases ACD which shows indirectly a change in the MIOL position, however, this effect does not correlate with the change in VA and refraction.
