Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare central corneal thickness (CCT) measurements obtained by AL-Scan, LenStar LS900, Galilei, and ultrasound pachymetry in normal and cataracteous eyes.

Setting:

Cross-sectional comparative study / Ondokuz Mayıs University, Samsun Turkey

Methods:

The study recruited 80 eyes of healthy subjects from the University of Ondokuz Mayıs. Each subject was assessed by 4 different methods of measurements using AL-Scan, LenStar LS900, Galilei and ultrasound pachymetry (UP) by a single examiner (M.D.). After completing the non contact examination, UP measurements were performed after the corneas were anesthetized using 0.5% proparacaine hydrochloride. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS. Repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey multiple comparisons test were used for the comparison of four different methods. The Bland–Altman plots were used to evaluate the agreement of measurements between pairs of the devices.

Results:

The mean age (± SD) of the subjects was 33.6 (±9.7) years (range: 19 to 66 years). The mean CCT (±SD) for AL-Scan, Lenstar LS900, Galilei, and UP were 554.6 (±30.9), 542.9 (±31.3), 570.7 (±30), and 552.7 (±32.8) μm respectively. The differences between pairs of mean CCT for the methods are statistically significant for the pairs of Galilei-UP, AL Scan-Galilei and Lenstar Galilei. Bland–Altman plots showed that, AL Scan - UP have the closest agreement, followed by Lenstar - UP and AL Scan - Lenstar. Galilei was found to have the poorest agreement with the other three methods.

Conclusions:

We found that AL Scan- UP showed the closest agreement, followed by Lenstar - UP and AL Scan- Lenstar. With a perfect correlation of CCT measurements between AL Scan and UP, they can be used interchangeably in clinical practice. However, Galilei significantly underestimates CCT compared with the other methods. It was also showned that Al Scan had excellent intraexaminer repeatability.
