ESCRS MEDIA BACKGROUNDER
Founded in 1991, the ESCRS is Europe 's leading organisation for cataract and refractive surgeons and is at the forefront of developments in anterior segment surgery. The society currently has 3,500 members from over 90 different countries worldwide. The ESCRS offers a unique forum for the discussion and learning that are essential for progress, and ensures that international expertise is shared by ophthalmologists all over Europe .
Membership benefits include; subscription to the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, subscription to ESCRS EuroTimes, reduced registration fees for ESCRS meetings, access to continuing education, voting rights and international network.
ESCRS History
The European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons evolved from the European Intraocular Implant Club which was established in 1981. Since 1991 the society has been administered by the ESCRS Board, a board of Ophthalmologists elected by its members. The ESCRS staff based in Dublin , Ireland are responsible for the organisation of the Society's day-to-day activities.

The ESCRS hosts two annual events; Annual Congress on Cataract and Refractive Surgery (September) and Winter Meeting on Refractive Surgery (January/February). The ESCRS also exhibits at the AAO and the ASCRS as well as a number of other major worldwide ophthalmology meetings.

Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery
The Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery (JCRS), a preeminent peer-reviewed monthly ophthalmology publication, is the official journal of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) . JCRS publishes high quality articles on all aspects of anterior segment surgery. In addition to original clinical studies, the journal features a consultation section, practical techniques, important cases, and reviews as well as basic science articles. All ESCRS members receive a free subscription to the journal and are able to access the journal on-line.
ESCRS EuroTimes
ESCRS EuroTimes enters its 9th year of the publication in the year 2004. It is a monthly publication and is circulated to over 22,000 ophthalmic surgeons in Europe and around the world.
ESCRS EuroTimes reports on developments in surgical techniques and equipment, and highlights the ophthalmologists making these developments possible. Its coverage includes the range of ophthalmic surgery including cataract, glaucoma and refractive techniques.
EU Mail
EU Mail is a quarterly electronic newsletter sent to ESCRS members. EU Mail focuses on how the European Union debates, develops, and implements new laws that affect the practice of ophthalmology throughout the European Union. EU Mail highlights the work of four EU institutions: the European Council of Ministers, European Commission, European Parliament, and European Court of Justice.
ESONT EuroTimes
ESONT EuroTimes is distributed on a quarterly basis. The publication informs members about ESONT and its activities and publishes practical information of interest to members and provides a networking forum for members to communicate on a European level.
Education
All ESCRS meetings are CME accredited. Multiple educational opportunities in the form of symposia, wet labs, (surgical courses) and instructional courses are available at our meeting.
In addition, ESCRS EuroTimes, in association with the Industry, has developed a Satellite Education Programme. These programmes are always organised outside the official hours of t he ESCRS. The ESCRS organise s and promotes educational meetings in conjunction with its two annual meetings and other major ophthalmology meetings. One key advantage of working with the ESCRS is that the delegates attending meeting will receive CME credits.
ESCRS EuroTimes will provide marketing and promotion assistance and develop follow-up materials for circulation with the magazine.
ESONT: European Society of Ophthalmic Nurses and Technicians
The European Society of Ophthalmic Nurses and Technicians was founded in 2003. ESONT aims to offer a European support network for ophthalmic nurses and technicians through the provision of a forum for communication and ongoing education and so to enhance and improve the care of the ophthalmic patient.
